Family Medicine

Family Medicine physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners are primary care providers. They are medical specialists who provide comprehensive primary health care to people of all ages, from birth to advanced years. They are able to diagnose and treat the vast majority of common illnesses and injuries, as well as provide preventive care. Family Medicine providers place special emphasis on the care of families and refer patients to specialists and other community resources when necessary.

James S. Bear, MD

James S. Bear, MD received his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Iowa. He completed his family practice residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bear enjoys caring for the entire family and has particular interests in pediatrics, obstetrical care, and sports medicine. He and his wife, Lisa, have three children. Their leisure activities include church involvement, various sporting activities, and outdoor recreation.

Bruce A. Evink, MD

Bruce A. Evink, MD received his bachelor degree from Dordt College in Iowa, and received his master degree in Physical Therapy from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, and completed his residency at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN. Dr. Evink enjoys caring for both children and adults with special interests in sports medicine, obstetrical care, and preventive medicine. He and his wife, Donna, have two children. Leisure activities include volleyball, basketball, camping, church activities, and family time.

Kristi A. Gagne, MD

Kristi A. Gagne, MD received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Dakota. She completed her residency at the UND Family Practice Residency in Fargo. Dr. Gagne enjoys patients of all ages, with special interests in women's health, obstetrics, and pediatrics. She is married with three children, and in her free time enjoys golf, playing piano, and spending time on the lake.

Douglas M. Griffin, MD

Douglas M. Griffin, MD is a graduate of St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota Medical School.  He completed his family practice residency at the Sioux Falls Family Practice Residency, and for more 20 years has provided the full scope of family medicine to patients of all ages. He is married with five children, and in his leisure time enjoys music, theater, running, church activities, and time on the lake.

Scott T. Hegstad, MD

Scott T. Hegstad, MD received his bachelor degree in Chemistry at the University of Minnesota - Morris, and his medical degree at the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency at North Memorial Medical Center in Minneapolis. His medical interests include pediatrics and sports medicine. His leisure interests are basketball, volleyball, computers, and chasing his two children, Graham and Camille.

Randy J. Peterson, MD

Randy J. Peterson, MD graduated with a bachelor degree in Biology from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his internship and residency at Sioux Falls Family Practice Residency in Sioux Falls, SD. In 2002, Dr. Peterson was named Minnesota’s “Family Physician of the Year” by the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. He enjoys family time, outdoor activities, golfing, and school functions.

Scott A. Sundby, MD received his undergraduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He loves spending time in the outdoors canoeing, biking, golfing, and cross-country skiing with his wife, Jen, and two daughters.

Mark A. Helgeson, PA-C

Mark A. Helgeson, PA-C received his associate degree from the Medical Institute of Minnesota in Laboratory Studies, and completed his Physician Assistant training at St. Cloud State University receiving an Associate in Science degree. He is nationally certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, and, in addition, holds a specialty degree from NCCPA in primary care. He has 29 years of practice experience and enjoys taking care of all age groups. He is married and has three children. He is a musician, motorcyclist, and enjoys reading.

Jodi M. Nicholson, PA-C

Jodi M. Nicholson, PA-C is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She then received her Masters of Medical Science Degree from the Physician Assistant Program at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Her special interests in medicine include geriatrics, family planning, health education, and preventive medicine. She is married with three children, and enjoys spending time with family, playing and watching sports, and crafts.

Jessica R. Paulsen, PA-C earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She obtained her Master of Science degree through the University of Wisconsin La Crosse - Gundersen Lutheran - Mayo Physician Assistant Program. Her medical interests include adolescent and women's health, surgical assisting, and patient education. She is married to an Alexandria native and they have two children. Jessica enjoys her church, playing the piano, fishing, and Minnesota Twins baseball.

Tina E. Evenson, RN, CNP

Tina E. Evenson, RN, CNP received her Master's Degree in Science and Nursing from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND in 2008. Tina has experience in Family Medicine, Urgent Care, and Women's Health. She also has fourteen years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Tina's special interests include health promotion, smoking cessation, women's health, adolescents, and pediatrics. Tina and her daughter, Hannah, have been members of the Alexandria community for more than ten years. She enjoys walking and riding bike on the Central Lakes Trail, reading, watching the Vikings in the winter months, and spending time with her family and friends on the lake.

Katie M. Halder, RN, CNP

Katie M. Halder, RN, CNP earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the College of St. Catherine and her Master of Science degree in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities campus. Katie enjoys providing healthcare to people of all ages and has special interests in preventive care and health promotion for the entire family. In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time with her husband, Chris, and their daughter, Dorothy, being outdoors, and reading.

Roberta J. Montgomery, RN, CNP

Roberta J. Montgomery, RN, CNP earned her bachelor degree in Nursing from North Dakota State University and master degree in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of North Dakota. She loves working with people of all ages, and has special interest in teen/young adult issues and women’s health.  She feels privileged to have taken care of families as a Nurse Practitioner for the past 12 years.  Favorite activities include spending time at the lake, reading, attending sporting activities, and photography, all of which are enjoyed with her husband, Jeff, and their two children, Parker and Kennedy.
